It’s  that TIME again!  Time for that once a month update I promised I would give.  Let me first focus on all the good things in regards to February 2014.  Although really great things happened in February, I did not lose a single pound.  I mean at one point I did, there were a couple of days I was down for a total of 8 pounds but it went back up and stayed there.  So no weight loss this month it remains at 6 pounds total lost, and you want to know my real honest true feelings??  I’m discouraged, I’m upset, it sucks.  Yep, those are my true feelings.  I feel like giving up.  But I WILL NOT.  Don’t worry I’m still doing this.  Back to the positive things.

I walked 21 out of 28 days in February, I exceeded my goal!!

I tried the cool salad in a jar trick I saw on Pinterest.  It’s AMAZING!!

I drank plenty of water!

I have logged my calories every day for 58 days in a row on “my fitness pal”

When I have gone out to eat I order water to drink and only eat half my meal.  Because I still order things I love.

Two different gals at Bible study told me I was looking “good”  I’ll take it!

I got a tattoo!

Girl Scout cookies arrived.  I bought 10 boxes this year to support the little troopers I know and well; the thin mints sort of get me.  The rest I can pass on.

Although I didn’t lose a single pound in February, I’m newly energized for the month of March because we just started a pool at work for weight loss.  So we are competing (for money) so that will hopefully get me to think a little harder and longer about what I choose to do each day.

Lastly I will share my goals for March with you.

I plan to walk at least 4 times a week.

Eat breakfast every single day.

I plan to stretch nearly every night because I have a goal to do the splits just like my littlest and only girl.  We have a really cool and exciting blog called “Life in the 7 Cea’s”    In this blog Abbie and I share healthy snacks, and activities we do with each other to lead a healthy lifestyle.  It’s fun because it’s a shared blog with our friends in Australia Cathie and Jess another mother daughter team with the same healthy goals.  It’s so adorable, I hope you will stop by and check it out.

Golden Yummy in the Tummy Turmeric Tea

I have been known to take on lots of things however the things I’m talking about are usually of the creative sort, not so much the productive sort to a mainstream kind of person.  I signed up for a 28 days class with Michelle   and in this class I will be participating with a group of like-minded gals to slow down and really take in the moments around us.  The first week focuses on food.  Of course I’m excited.  I ADORE food, all kinds.  I promised the group I would share a new drink that I tried this weekend thanks to a local girlfriend of mine who told me all about it.  You can find the “real” recipe HERE  but you can also follow my loose version.  Because I don’t like to follow directions all that much.

I have included some pictures of the steps I took to make this yummy tummy warming drink.  Pretty good idea for all you in cold climates and if you happen to like the flavors of turmeric and ginger and coconut milk.  My friend Leah makes hers with raw milk and we both agree the honey required is way too much money, like about 30.00 for a jar of the Manuka honey.  

So here are all the things you will need in order to make this drink the way I make it. Coconut milk, coconut water, raw honey, turmeric, ginger and ghee

 grate the knob of ginger

 add a spoonful of turmeric

 add a spoonful of ghee and mix it all together to form a paste

 Then put one cup of coconut milk, one cup of coconut water in a saucepan and add in that paste, plus a heaping teaspoon of honey.  Heat it all up.

Then  be sure to strain it cause the first time I made this drink I didn’t and I was eating the ginger, which wasn’t so bad but it’s so much better smooth! That’s what happens when directions are not read.

You are what you eat

I was inspired by Facebook today.  Yes FB!  A friend of mine posted a really pretty picture of produces and it read, You are what you eat….so don’t be fast, cheap, easy or fake.  Well it prevented me from going through a drive through quick.  I had so much to do today after work, that a drive through sounded easy however I came straight home instead.  I had 30 minutes before I had to leave with Papa and take Austin’s car into the shop.  I got out our left over red quinoa from dinner last night, I added avocado, spinach, cherry tomatoes, red onion (still think they should be called purple onion) and cucumber to the quinoa, a little drizzle of olive oil, a little balsamic vinegar and that was lunch, I sprinkled sea salt on there too.  It was SOOOOO GOOD.  Really lots of flavor and wonderful tastes mixing together.  Colorful too.  I put in all the separate ingredients into my calorie counter app and it’s a little high for lunch at about 450 calories but did you hear/see all that really good stuff that was inside this quinoa salad?  And I made it in less than 10 minutes maybe even 5, ate it and cleaned up my mess before I had to leave and drop off the car at the mechanics.  Picked up littlest and only girl by 3:00, stopped by home depot for some light switches, Fresh and Easy for some corn tortillas and a little produce to juice tomorrow and now I sit here, telling you about it all.  I have less than an hour to be here then I have to get soccer player and last the oldest from work by 5:00.  And so on and so forth. I love being a mom though but my point is, I’m busy today.  I didn’t go through a drive through and I had a really yummy lunch, even took a picture of it so you could see within those 30 minutes.

A few hi-lights from this weekend would include the walk I took with two really amazing young girls.  These two girls have such an eye for finding things.  They were seeking out faces, hearts, patterns, flowers, making wishes and jumping with joy.  We walked to the corner Japanese dollar fifty store and sort of got lost in our walk back home.  We took an alternate route and found such fun things.  I plan to share more about our walk in my new blog which will be launched in February.  I will still be keeping this blog but my new blog will be a joint project with my friend Cathie and her daughter all the way over in Australia.  We plan on being healthy examples for our daughters. And will probably have a post once a week.  We each have one daughter and I’m so excited about this project I can hardly wait because the girls will be able to participate too.  The blog has a clever name that includes lots of C’S.  We are focusing on  words that begin with the letter C that will help us reach our goals and have loads of fun with our girls in the meantime.  So I will share more about our Saturday walk there when the blog goes live and maybe even a small slide show since we just found such awesome things on our outside adventure.  Here is a sneak peek of the three shadows out playing.  I hope you will be as excited as we are about the new blog.  It will be a very encouraging for mom’s or as Cathie says Mum’s with daughters.

One might do this

Because a wise Eastern doctor told one it was good  thing to do

Every day if  possible

Which that’s not really the case for this particular one

So when this particular one does it

She feels good about oneself

Then one sees the animals all around her and becomes quickly distracted by all their wonder

One decides taking lots of pictures of them would be a perfect idea

Only the shy kitty is harder to photograph and she has to take her time slowly sneaking up

Until she got only just a little bit closer

And he runs away

This just meant,  one went on to the kitty that doesn’t mind

if one sticks the lens nearly straight in his face

All the while getting shadowed by a big dog and a little dog

All at once

She decides to also take their pictures

and sort of gets caught up in the animal photo session

Then one thinks trying out her timer

in between stripping off her bed sheets of course

would be a fun to do

Why not lie on top the dining table

it’s a better way to view the room

or the ceiling rather

One realizes just how old she is

because she feels motion sickness

and up again to try different shots with her timer

Like real live motion sickness

as if she is trying to read her favorite magazine

While on the winding roads of the local mountains

Not a smart idea

That’s what one might do when one gets off work and is waiting for her children to be done with practices

Monday

It sure is a Monday.  I’m feeling really overwhelmed today.  The house is a mess (yep I choose this over that) but it has me feeling anxious just the same.  This will be quick.

Aunt Mel gave me a few really, really great ideas when we had a nice conversation this weekend.  The first is a new breakfast item, or any time of the day snack.  Check out these ham and cheese cups.  So easy and my fitness pal gives them with the information I put in a total calorie intake per serving of 160 calories.  I just had one for breakfast with my cup of coffee.  But today when I got home from work I had one for lunch with my kale salad.  It was quick and easy to re-heat and tasted really just as great the next day.

Told you it would be short and sweet.   but before I leave…I leave you with this,  the two most adorable girls visited yesterday and watched t.v. with motorcycle man for a while.  I’ll just give you a peek at their sweetness, since they are not mine to share entirely their faces.  But I promise you, oh the sweetest faces they have.  Just close your eyes and picture the clearest sparkle blue eyes, and rosy cheeks with fair angel hair and the sweetest face you can think of…that’s them.

happy weekend

Well of course I will be posting pictures of food, I’m on a mission and food is a big part of my life.  So last night I made grilled teriyaki chicken with a slice of pineapple, a kale salad and a tiny bit of rice.  The picture below is the soccer players plate, he can get away with a little more carbs since he is so active.  It may look big but looks are deceiving because for years now we all (including) motorcycle man use a salad plate as our dinner plate.  This is all piled on a salad plate and the kale salad was a first.  I have tried kale chips and I have put kale in soups but never have I attempted to make a salad of it.  The results were awesome, soccer player loved it, motorcycle man liked it, I really, really loved it and the littlest and only girl tried some left over today and she likes it.  I think I’m on to a new healthy salad.

I took these images at night and although they don’t look very natural with natural light like I adore, they look okay.  My Canon 20D would have never taken a picture this well at night….EVER.

In the salad I put kale, swiss chard, carrots, red cabbage and dried cranberries.  I just used a simple balsamic vinaigrette dressing.  I’m excited to add this to the rotation.

I tried a new breakfast too.  My sister Sarah sent me this awesome link pop sugar for recipe ideas and this was a breakfast idea which includes avocados, one of my favorite things to eat.  Half an avocado with an egg cooked in it’s pit hole.  I cooked it on 425 for 20 minutes.  If the idea of hot avocado doesn’t appeal  to you, don’t bother.  I personally didn’t mind it.  I eat avocado rolls that are warm and like them so I figured why not?  The egg yolk remains runny but again, I love my eggs over easy so this worked for me.  I total this breakfast at 217 calories, the avocado was small and my fitness pal gave it that number calculation.

First and foremost HOLY WOW and THANK YOU all for your tremendous support.  I feel as if I have the biggest support team ever for this healthy journey of mine.  Seriously I can’t let you all down and most of all I can’t let myself down.  I owe it to my kids and family to take the best possible care of myself and for too long I have let this very important facet of my life just sit at the sidelines with no real importance.  When really it’s so very important to take care of our (as my friend Vanessa best said it)  “vessels which hold our beautiful souls”  Our bodies are gifts and we should treat them as such.  So once more, thank you so very much for all your enormous support, it means so very much to me.  I may post recipes or food here or there but I will not post progress but once a month as not to overwhelm myself or anyone else watching. I’m not here to elaborate on all my past fails.  This is by far not my first attempt at good health but it is a new day and a new year and looking forward will be much healthier.

Yesterday I took my word CHANGE serious and attended a small gathering with Abbie and her new friends from her new school with new mom’s I had not met. Normally I would avoid this sort of thing at most every cause.  I don’t really want to meet new people and talk about things that are small talk.  Plus I’m really extremely shy.  But I went and my best encouragement came from my only and littlest girl, she said “Mom, you are the most creative and crazy mom I know! you will be okay” Crazy, yes.  In my own comfort zone but not among strangers.  It went better than great.  The women were really welcoming and beautiful inside and out.  I’m so happy I made the change and went.  I think this word is going to turn my life upside down.

I also took a few minutes of my day and took pictures of the graceful tulips we brought home from Trade Joes.  I decided to take them from various angles.  Just more practice you know. I love watching them bend and open.

look at that first shot of the back-end! Goodness to Betsy! And the only reason I’m smiling in the second shot is because so many people in their befores look miserable, I didn’t want to look that way, even though I should be feeling that way.  I’m hoping I can slim down and do this B-town t-shirt some honest to good justice, let’s watch and see as the days go by.

So over the past few years I seem to fluctuate anywhere from 165 to 183ish.  I think 183 has been my tops-ish.  Used to be at one time 160 was my tops, then 170 and so on…..geesh.  January of 2013 I started my weight at 165 and from there just went up and up with an occasional very short-lived down.  In 2012 I ate really, really healthy for 6 weeks straight, no sugar or processed and I lost 20 pounds.  I was so proud of myself.  I tend to just fall back to comfortable no thinking sort of lifestyle which always, always leads to more weight on my (small) frame.  I’m 5’ 4” and I have sort of small feet, and hands and a tiny head, my body should all match up.  When my feet begin to hurt, like really really hurt, then I know things are really wrong.  I get up and limp around like I’m more like 85 rather than 43.  I also know if I just shed less than 8 pounds my feet will feel better.  My goal this month is to get rid of 5 pounds.  A small attainable goal.  I’m going to watch my calorie intake and move more, I’m going to drink a little more water.  How is that for CHANGE.  I hope I can share my positive change all year with whoever is interested.  I get so encouraged by my friends and family who support me in my ventures.  I’m not proud of these (before) pictures.  They were a wakeup call, especially the one from behind, holy WOW, somewhat of a wide load.  I mean if you cover the bottom half of me you can see I’m meant to be smaller.  So here we go.  I will only do status updates at the beginning of each month.

Things I hope will change

The pain in my feet will go away

My skin will heal

My sleep will improve

My energy will increase

Let’s see if these things begin to CHANGE.  I love my new word, the possibilities are endless.  It’s up to me to make better choices.
